Just Transition: fairness in the transition to climate neutrality

The system change towards a climate-neutral economy will bring with it many upheavals. On the one hand, highly qualified "green jobs" will be created, while on the other, certain energy- and CO2-intensive industries will become less important, which will also affect jobs and pose a challenge for entire regions. In terms of a "just transition", it is important to think about the ecological and social challenges together and develop appropriate solutions.

In order to manage the transformation of our economy and society in a socially just way, we will need economic and social policy instruments as well as accompanying and compensatory measures.

Just transition, i.e. a fair transition to a more sustainable economic system for all, is a core element of the EU's Green Deal. As part of the European Commission's Just Transition Fund, a total investment volume of around 100 billion euros is expected across Europe in 2021-2027. The fund is primarily intended to benefit those regions in Europe whose economies are heavily dependent on coal or other fossil fuels and therefore employ a particularly large workforce in these industries.

We provide answers on just transition

In order to analyze the structural change towards climate neutrality and possible measures to maintain the competitiveness of the local economy and thus employment, interdisciplinary skills are required: such as knowledge of energy and CO2-intensive industries, knowledge of research, strategies and programs in the field of research , Technology and Innovation (FTI), a profound understanding of economic contexts or experience in assessing the effects of climate laws on society and the labor market. The Austrian Energy Agency scores points here with its more than 100 employees from a wide range of disciplines. In addition, its form of organization also offers advantages: the federal government, all federal states, major companies in the energy and transport sectors, interest groups and scientific organizations are members of the scientific association.
