BioBASE

BioBASE - Biorefinery hub

For Austria as a business location, the bio-based industry offers great opportunities for regional value creation through the manufacture of products, fuels and energy using regionally available resources from agriculture and forestry. The use of renewable raw materials is already a well-established economic sector in this country. Against this background, the project BioBASE aims to create a platform for networking the entire bio-based industry in Austria. The broad industry positioning resulting from the extensive member network and the associated technological and problem-solving expertise is to be used to implement promising innovation projects in the field of biorefineries in Austria. These are:

  • Carbon Capture Utilization (CCU) - Recyclable material production
  • Residual material biorefinery (lignin)
  • Residual material biorefinery (whey/proteins from the food industry)
  • Circular economy
  • Biopolymers/Biocomposites
  • Biorefinery training courses
  • Wood and forest use

About the project

The innovation laboratory of the FTI Initiative Production of the Future of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG aims to create a platform for the entire bio-based industry in Austria. This will network internally in business & science, but also inform the public externally and create awareness for the topics of circular economy, bioeconomy and biorefineries in particular. As a hub for in-depth know-how and the exchange of innovation ideas as well as communication with decision-makers, it will create the framework conditions for the successful market launch of bio-based products. The networking of biorefinery stakeholders from industry and science & research is intended to serve new R &D projects and the establishment of innovative B2B cooperations. The broad spectrum of biorefinery topics will also be used to identify the need for training and further education as well as suitable training courses and training tracks and address these together with the university partners.

One of the tasks of the Austrian Energy Agency is to process knowledge, communicate and network actors from various industrial sectors to present and record possible value chains for agricultural and forestry raw materials and residues in an interactive competence map - the so-called BioBASEcompass. The innovative database makes material flows in the bioeconomy visible and dynamically links national and, in future, international players to network their fields of activity.

As part of the ongoing klimaaktiv Bioökonomie program, the Austrian Energy Agency is already supporting the BMK by preparing information on the bioeconomy, quantifying it and holding networking events such as the Bioeconomy Expert:innenbeirat. The Austrian Energy Agency has also supported the BMK in the creation of the Austrian bioeconomy strategy and the brochure Lighthouses of the bioeconomy in Austria in terms of content and organization. Further information can be found in the information center.
