Emission Price Indices

Methodology

In the initial phase, the Austrian Emissions Trading System Index (OETSI) reflects the price development within the framework of the National Emissions Trading Act (NEHG). This national system is expected to be gradually replaced by the European Emissions Trading System for Buildings and Transport (ETS2) from 2028. The first effects of ETS2 on the OETSI are expected in the first quarter of 2027.

The OETSI describes the price that a supplier must pay for the required emission allowances in a defined procurement period with constant procurement.

More details and the monthly press release are available in German.

About the Austrian Emission Price Indices (OETSI)

OETSI and ÖGPI-Clean make the costs of greenhouse gas emissions visible and should therefore increase transparency for end customers. From January 2026, the OETSI will show the price per tonne of CO₂ for greenhouse gas emissions in the buildings and transport sectors (initially according to national fixed prices, in future according to market prices of the EU ETS2). The ÖGPI-Clean combines wholesale natural gas prices with CO₂ costs and thus provides a clear, "clean" view of gas including emissions.
