IEA HPT ANNEX 60

Refurbishment of large non-residential buildings with heat pumps

The IEA HPT Annex 60 of the International Energy Agency (IEA) aims to identify and remove market barriers to the use of heat pump systems in the context of partial refurbishment of large non-residential buildings with complex HVAC systems.

  • Provide evidence of the practical feasibility and satisfactory operation of installed heat pump systems in large non-residential buildings, including insights into the decisions that led to the selection of HVAC systems;
  • Develop easy-to-use, easily accessible recommendations based on the selected system components for the respective framework conditions, provide references and summaries of the relative strengths of the individual system options.

The national annex project focuses specifically on the following types of non-residential buildings: industrial buildings, hospitals, shopping centers and educational institutions (kindergartens, schools, universities) as well as museums.

Experience and knowledge from successfully implemented large reference projects with heat pump solutions for heating and cooling (partially) renovated non-residential buildings are collected in a structured manner, in particular in the course of expert interviews and the analysis of information and data from literature and real operation, and evaluated techno-economically with regard to the reasons for the selection of system components and their relative advantages and disadvantages.

The findings are summarized in easy-to-use, easily accessible recommendations in the form of guidelines, primarily to help decision-makers find solutions and identify options that serve as a basis for further, more detailed considerations.
